Indonesia stabilizes China’s coal supply

In November, China imported 22.14 million tons of coal. After a month, it once again refreshed China’s history of the highest single-month coal imports. Indonesia continues to rank first in China’s coal imports.

In November, China imported 8.087 million tons of coal from Indonesia, which was 36.52% of the country's total imports. In November of this year, China imported a total of 56.588 million tons of coal from Indonesia, and 35.13% of the country’s total imported coal. In November, China’s top five coal import countries were still Indonesia, Australia, Mongolia, Vietnam, and South Africa. China’s coal imports from Vietnam surpassed South Africa in fourth place, and imported 2.0328 million tons of coal from the country that month. In November, China imported 464.49 million tons of coal from Australia, accounting for 20.98% of the total import volume. Mongolia imported 2.5929 million tons of coal, accounting for 9.18% of the total.

In view of the increase in domestic coal demand, many large coal exporters will consider reducing their export volume. It is expected that from 2015 onwards, Vietnam will be transformed into a net importer after a number of thermal power plants are put into operation. By 2013, the annual export volume of coal in Vietnam will fall to 8 million tons, and by 2015, the export volume will fall back to 4 to 5 million tons. Earlier, Indonesian company minister Dahlan Iskan urged to limit coal exports to ensure that domestic coal demand is met.
