The news helped scientists discover that the Higgs Boson's Large Hadron Collider (LHC) is a huge device buried beneath the Swiss-French border. Improving beam quality can improve the performance of such devices. Researchers have described their methods in a paper in the Journal of Applied Physics by the American Association of Physics. Conventional particle accelerators use electric fields or radio waves to accelerate charged particle beams. The laser wake accelerator operates on a very different principle. The laser in such an accelerator sends pulses through a diffuse plasma. Plasma is a state of matter containing cations and free electrons. The laser pulse excites the electric wave in the plasma. In turn, electric waves create an electric field, also known as the laser tail field, which captures electrons and accelerates them to gigaohm volts. In contrast, as the world's most powerful particle accelerator, lhc accelerates particles to terahertz (1000 times gigaohms). The technology invented by the Indian and South Korean research teams can increase the amount of electrons captured after laser pulse generation and thus improve the beam quality of the laser wake accelerator.
