Researchers at the Siberian Federal University and colleagues at the Royal Institute of Technology (Stockholm, Sweden) have discovered new properties of palladium-based materials that can improve the performance of solar cells.

Palladium diselenide is a promising material, and its performance has not been fully studied. For example, it is reported that its two-dimensional form can be effectively used for photocatalysis-the process of decomposing water into hydrogen and oxygen when exposed to sunlight, which can be used to produce ecological fuel. Researchers have recently learned how to synthesize single-layer and double-layer versions of PdSe 2 compositions, but until recently the advantages and disadvantages of these materials were still unknown. The researchers used high-precision calculation methods for the first time and managed to study the electronic and optical properties of single-layer and double-layer materials based on palladium diselenide. The results proved that it can absorb solar energy. More effective than silicon-based materials used in solar cells.

"Compared with the silicon-based elements currently used as semiconductors, this material shows a higher conversion of solar energy into electrical energy because it can significantly improve the efficiency of solar cells ... Palladium dipalladium (PdSe 2) in space In the construction of ships and artificial earth satellites, solar cell elements can be used as independent materials, because in most cases, material efficiency proves the cost of the aerospace industry, "said Artem Kuklin, a researcher at the Siberian Federal University.

For high-precision calculations of material properties, the scientists used the Akademik Matrosov supercomputer located at the Matrosov Institute of Dynamics and Control Theory of the RAS Siberian Branch System.

"Because this method is environmentally friendly and relatively cheap," Russia's share of "solar" energy will grow steadily. Today, there are 10 "solar" stations in China with a total capacity of about 100 MW, which is 0.04% of the total installed capacity of the Russian power system. In Yakutia, the electricity cost of diesel generators is very expensive, and the solar installation here can greatly reduce the cost of energy supply. Our goal is to develop more advanced materials in order to increase efficiency. Solar cells have increased, "Artem Kuklin said.

The results of the scientific work are published in the Journal of Physical Review B. The researchers plan to continue to study the effects of defects on their nature and their probability of formation. After learning to manage defects, scientists will be able to create materials with predictable characteristics.
