Chinese scientists super-fast production of graphene

Graphene, which has been hailed as "the new darling of industry", has attracted much attention in recent years. However, there has been no quick and safe industrial preparation method. Professor Gao Chao of the Department of Polymer Science and Technology at Zhejiang University has now found a “green route” that is suitable for large-scale production, enabling single-layer graphene to be formed in one hour, and the efficiency increased by more than ten times.

Graphene is a thin sheet of carbon atoms. It consists of carbon atoms that form hexagonal rings. The rings are connected to form a honeycomb plane. This is the thinnest and hardest nanomaterial in the world. The thinness of a layer of graphene is less than one nanometer, which is invisible and intangible to the naked eye. When 200,000 pieces of graphene are added together, only one hair is thick.

Gao Chao introduced that the current methods for the preparation of graphene are mainly mechanical stripping, redox and the like. The limitation of the mechanical glass method is that the obtained product is a mixture of graphenes of different layers, and it is difficult to prepare monolayer graphene on a large scale; oxidation-reduction methods commonly use chlorine-based and manganese-based oxidants, and the preparation time is as long as ten hours. It will produce toxic gas and heavy metal pollution. Manganese oxide and other intermediates are also prone to explosion.

After many years of exploration, the research team discovered a new, cheap, non-toxic iron-based oxidant that replaced chlorine-based and manganese-based oxidants that have been used for more than half a century.

"The 'run' of this iron oxidant molecule is very fast, like a wedge, quickly intercalates into the graphite interior, allowing the graphite to quickly delaminate. This process generates oxygen and helps 'top' layers of graphite, allowing Preparation speeds up.” Gao Chao said that this method has no hidden danger of explosion, will not produce harmful substances and is environmentally friendly.

At the same time, this method of making a single layer of graphene oxide can be completed within one hour, making large-scale application of graphene in the industry possible.

The related paper was published on the "Nature News" magazine in the magazine "Nature" on January 21.

Previously, the research group has used graphene as a raw material to prepare various macroscopic materials such as graphene fibers, graphene aerogels, and graphene films. These high-strength, high-tenacity, high-conductivity graphene materials are expected to be widely used in many fields such as mobile devices, aerospace, and new energy batteries.
