A system that can detect and feedback abnormal information of elderly people living alone - "Active Sensing System Based on Motion Sensing Analysis" was successfully developed by teacher Liu Xiang of Shanghai University of Engineering Technology.

Although the name is somewhat complicated, the core of this system is actually a motion-sensing device such as a U disk. Liu Xiang introduced that the family members of the elderly can download a specific APP software on their mobile phones in advance and connect to the “U disk” via Bluetooth. Once the elderly person falls, faints or becomes sick during an outing or encounters an emergency, the system detects abnormal information of the elderly and immediately sends a message to the designated contact person in the old man's cell phone.

Liu Xiang said that if suspicious individuals break into the elderly room, the system will introduce monitoring video through real-time motion detection and target analysis. Once the analysis identifies suspicious individuals entering the room in an unusual way, the system will automatically open an alarm state and notify the family. At the same time, the system can also combine walking trajectory positioning with video face retrieval to not only quickly find the elderly lost, but also quickly locate the elderly, so that families can find their whereabouts and help dementia elderly to go home.

At present, the system is piloted in some old-age communities in Taizhou, Jiangsu, and in an old-age community in Nagoya, Tokyo, Japan. It is used in ordinary families to achieve remote care and safety of elderly people living alone.

Trash cans powered by solar cells

There are many classified trash bins on the streets of Shencheng, but because of the lack of knowledge and awareness of garbage classification, the effect is not ideal. The team led by Zhao Zhenfeng, a senior engineer from the School of Mechanical Engineering at Shanghai University of Engineering Science, successfully developed the “Environmental-friendly Automatic Sorting Trash Can” that will help solve this problem. As long as people throw garbage into the bin, the “separator” inside the bin will start working and automatically sort the different types of cans, such as cans, toothpaste skins, light bulbs, and batteries, to facilitate the collection of sanitation workers.

Zhang Chunyan, the instructor of the project, told reporters that the structure of automatic trash bins formed on the market at present is more complicated and the cost is very high. They are often only applied to garbage processing plants. “Our design will focus on recreational areas such as communities and parks, and it will solve the problem of classification while everyone throws garbage. In order to save costs, the team has been able to optimize its structure and control, and its aluminum skeleton has been used to make garbage. The barrel becomes more solid; all control elements are integrated on one PCB board (printed circuit board), and the control module is also integrated in a circuit control box. At the same time, the use of solar panels to save energy.
